Apple Computer, Inc. designs, develops. produces, markets and services microprocessor-based personal computer systems for individual use in solving computing problems commonly encountered in business, education, science, engineering and in the home.
Let’s connect the dots…
You’re in the right place to learn about Apple products and find more ways to enjoy them. As you learn more, you can share your knowledge with the community. It’s fun to be part of the world’s largest community of Apple fans.
When Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak completed the Apple I, they didn’t alert the media. They demonstrated it to their soul mates at the Homebrew Computer Club.
…
The Homebrew Club—like similar clubs—was a forum for sharing ideas. It attracted hobbyists and those eager to experiment, many of whom became leaders in personal computing. (computerhistory.org)
Steve Jobs : It was the computer hobbyist community that first thought about making a computer out of these things… The clubs were based around a computer kit called the Altair. And so what an “Apple I” was was really an extension of this terminal—putting a microprocessor on the back end. (propos retranscrit parmi d’autres dans le livre Valley of Genius: The Uncensored History of Silicon Valley)
He (Steve) was more interested in the Homebrew Computer Club as a way to make a business. (Randy Wigginton dans Valley of Genius: The Uncensored History of Silicon Valley)
In April 1977 the Company introduced the Apple II computer mainframe which was similar to the Apple 1 but incorporated additional circuitry and a keyboard, and was packaged in a plastic housing. Although many of the early personal computers, including Apple's products, were purchased by hobbyists who were highly knowledgeable technicians, the Company believes that such purchases currently constitute a small and decreasing percentage of personal computer sales. (page 21 du prospectus)
Steve Wozniak designed the Apple II in 1977. The self-contained unit housed electronics, keyboard and power supply, with the BASIC language in permanent memory. A TV served as the display. The floppy disk drive (1978) and spreadsheet program VisiCalc (1979) made it a blockbuster.
When it debuted in 1977, the Apple II was promoted as an extraordinary computer for ordinary people. (computerhistory.org)
Unlike the earlier Apple I, for which users had to supply essential parts such as a case and power supply, the Apple II was a fully realized consumer product. Design and marketing emphasized simplicity, an everyday tool for home, work, or school. (computerhistory.org)
The Company's manufacturing operations consist principally of the purchase, assembly and test of the materials and components comprising its products at facilities located in Dallas, Texas; Cupertino, San Jose and Los Angeles, California; and, since October 1980, in County Cork, Ireland. The principal materials and components used in the production of Apple's products include semiconductors, plastic and metal parts, and certain electro-mechanical subassemblies purchased from independent suppliers. Although most are standard parts, certain items, such as metal and plastic parts and circuit boards are fabricated or assembled by independent vendors to Apple's specifications. In addition, Apple manufactures certain components such as disk drives and keyboards.
Jobs sold his Volkswagen bus and Wozniak his beloved HP-65 programmable calculator. Adding personal loans and vendor credit, they were able to afford parts to fill their first order from Palo Alto’s Byte Shop: 50 Apple-1 computers at $500 each.
Apple sold approximately 570, 7,600, 35,100 and 78,100 Apple II computer mainframes during the period ended September 30, 1977 and during the fiscal years ended September 30, 1978, September 30, 1979 and September 26, 1980, respectively. As of October 31, 1980 the Company had sold approximately· 131,000 Apple II computer mainframes.
Towards this end, the Company is committted to an extensive advertising and promotional effort. During the fiscal years ended September 30, 1978 and 1979 and September 26. 1980, the Company spent $573,000, $2,011,000 and $4,469,000, respectively, for advertising.
However, the Company believes that the ownership of patents is not presently a significant factor in its business ,and that its success does not depend on the Ownership of patents, but primarily on the innovative skills. technical competence and the marketing abilities of its personnel.
During the fiscal years ended September 30, 1978 and 1979 and September 26, 1980, the Company spent approximately $600,000, $3,600,000, and $7,300,000, respectively, for research and product development.
The rest is history…
Twelve days later, he sold his 10% share of the new company back to Jobs and Wozniak for US$800, and one year later accepted a final US$1,500 to forfeit any potential future claims against the newly incorporated Apple, totaling US$2,300.
